When Laila Fakhoury joined #iDoit4mycity The Podcast for Episode 4, “Kut Different,” the conversation centered on music, influence, community, and the work of connecting Gainesville to a wider creative world. But the larger story is what she has built around those ideas.

Across the episode—and in the projects that surround it—Fakhoury emerges as more than a promoter or venue operator. She is a cultural organizer: someone who turns rooms, events, and relationships into platforms other people can use.

Fakhoury’s path as an organizer began long before she became known in Gainesville’s nightlife and arts circles. Her Palestinian identity, community service, and interest in restorative justice shaped a view of culture as something that can preserve stories and expand who gets heard. In 2017, she delivered a TEDx talk on restorative justice and the school-to-prison pipeline.

At the University of Florida, she met Jahi and Khary Khalfani and helped launch Dion Dia in 2018. The independent record label was built to connect music with social good. Her lane included marketing and promotions, event curation, and community outreach—work that placed her at the intersection of artists, venues, organizers, and audiences.

In 2020, Fakhoury co-founded How Bazar. What began with pop-up markets grew into a downtown space where vintage, music, visual art, nightlife, and community programming could share an address. It became a testing ground for creators who needed a stage, a room, or simply a place to meet one another.

That matters in a city whose creative talent often operates in separate pockets. The deeper value of the space was not any single event; it was the connective tissue it gave Gainesville’s hip-hop, R&B, fashion, visual art, skate, food, and small-business communities.

That same approach expanded through BIG: Culture & Arts Festival. Launched as The Big Sho’ in 2023, the festival grew into a multi-day downtown showcase built to connect local artists with the rest of Florida and the wider industry. By its fourth year in 2026, public reporting documented 140 musicians across eight stages, alongside visual art, fashion, film, dance, skating, cars, and food.

The story kept moving after “Kut Different” was recorded. In August 2026, Fakhoury became the sole owner of the former How Bazar space and relaunched it as Bazaar47, sharpening its focus as an event venue and third place for gathering, connection, and community programming.

The transition is more than a rebrand. It shows the through line in Fakhoury’s work: use culture to bring people together, give creators practical platforms, and build reasons for talent to stay in Gainesville instead of believing opportunity only exists somewhere else.

Laila Fakhoury’s influence is not limited to one venue, one label, or one festival. It lives in the artists who found a stage, the vendors who met customers, the collaborators who met each other, and the audiences who saw Gainesville differently because of the spaces she helped create.
